This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Martha Washington Greene who married first, John C Nightingale, and second, Henry Turner, and attempt to connect them to their families
Transactions
In 1804 a group of 25 slaves is transferred three times. First from John C Nightingale and his wife Martha to Ray Sands Jr. in April. Second, from Ray Sands to Samuel W Greene on behalf of Martha W. Nightingale on May 22, 1804. The next day on May 23, 1804 the third transaction from John C Nightingale and his wife Martha to William Belcher of Boston.[1] The following slaves are listed on all three transactions:
- men: Jim, Cudjo, Frederic, Will, Fama, Frank, Tomba
- women: Violet, Jubey, Synah, Sally, Mary, Durah, Lydia, Mauma, Yarmah, Commissa
- boys: Quash, Christopher, Mobita, Duba, Cooley, and unnamed infant boy (parents Violet and Jim)
- girls: Commissa and Coomiba.
In 1810, Martha received her portion of her father's estates, she inherited the plantation called "the Springs" and the following slaves:[2]
- Milford, Tena, Junius, Robin, Carpenter, Jemmy, Phebe, Scipio, George, Jack, Harry, Mo, Morris, Mary, Daph, Jean, Rosetta, Moses, Dina, Ceasar, Charlotte, Abigail, Jacob, Phebe, Clarinda, Jack, Han, Maria, Peggy, Limos, Lucy and Jack
In 1811,these same slaves were released back to Martha's mother, Catharine Miller, per an agreement during the settlement of the estate.[3] The next year in 1812, Dr. Henry E Turner (her husband) deeded these slaves and others to Ray Sands (Ray is mentioned in the division of Nathanael Greene's estate's being Martha's attorney).[4]

The added names on the 1812 list match to many of the slaves sold to William Belcher in 1804. How did these slaves come back into the possession of Martha?
